A hot air balloon safari over Kenya’s wild landscapes is one of the most magical experiences Africa has to offer. As the first light of dawn paints the sky in shades of gold and pink, you rise silently above the savannah, drifting over herds of wildlife, winding rivers, and endless grasslands. The Masai Mara Balloon Experience

The Masai Mara is the most famous and popular location for balloon safaris in Kenya. Flights depart before dawn, and passengers gather in the darkness as the balloon is inflated by powerful burners that illuminate the surrounding bush in flickering orange light. Once airborne, the balloon drifts silently wherever the wind takes it — sometimes skimming the treetops, sometimes climbing hundreds of metres for panoramic views across the entire Mara ecosystem.

During the Great Migration season from July to October, balloon flights over the Mara offer an extraordinary aerial perspective on the massive herds of wildebeest and zebra that cover the plains. The flight typically lasts around one hour and culminates in a champagne bush breakfast served on white linen in the middle of the savannah — a tradition dating back to the earliest days of ballooning.

What to Expect

Balloon safaris begin with an early morning pickup from your lodge or camp, usually around 5:00 AM. After a short drive to the launch site, you watch the balloon being inflated before climbing into the basket. The flight lasts approximately 60 minutes, covering a distance of 10 to 20 kilometres depending on wind conditions. After landing, a champagne toast and full bush breakfast celebrate the experience.
