Kenya officially launched astro-tourism in September 2025 at the Samburu Sopa Lodge, and the country is now positioned as one of Africa’s premier stargazing destinations. Samburu’s remote location in northern Kenya, with its minimal light pollution, high elevation, and clear equatorial skies, creates conditions where the Milky Way blazes across the heavens with a brilliance that leaves visitors speechless. This is not just stargazing — it is a journey through the cosmos guided by ancient Samburu wisdom and modern astronomy.
The experience begins with a bush dinner under open skies, followed by Samburu cultural performers who welcome guests with energetic traditional dances before escorting them to a bonfire. Around the fire, trained Samburu cultural astronomers share indigenous sky knowledge — stories of how their ancestors used the stars for navigation, timekeeping, and spiritual guidance for generations. Using laser-guided pointers, they map the real-time night sky, helping guests identify constellations, visible planets, and celestial bodies while exploring their cultural significance.
The journey continues at the stargazing station, where high-powered telescopes reveal Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s moons, distant nebulae, and even the Andromeda Galaxy. The experience culminates at an immersive manyatta-shaped planetarium — the first of its kind globally — which offers an audio-visual cosmic journey where the night sky is digitally mapped and projected in stunning high definition.
Kenya sits on the equator, which grants a rare astronomical advantage: visitors can observe constellations from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. From December to March, all five visible planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn — often align in the night sky. The Samburu people have deep ancestral knowledge of the stars, using them to predict seasons, guide livestock movements, and mark ceremonial occasions.
Samburu National Reserve is the flagship destination for astro-tourism, anchored by Samburu Sopa Lodge’s certified programme. The Laikipia Plateau, particularly Loisaba Conservancy, is famous for its open-air star beds where guests sleep on elevated platforms under the night sky. Lake Turkana in the far north offers some of the most remote and unpolluted skies on the continent.
